Girls Rock

Recently I participated in a conversation on the ASCA Scene (if you're an ASCA member, you should totally check it out), about self esteem in girls. I was reminded of an awesome group that I needed to dust off and pull back out - Girls Rock. I originally heard about this group at my state conference. I've since adapted and made it my own.

Some of the songs might be outdated but here's what we rock out to:
True Friend, Miley Cyrus
Here I Am, Renee Sandstorm
Who Will I Be, Demi Lovato
Hero in You, KSM
I Don't Think About It, Emily Osment

I think a lot of the songs in my personal anthem blog post would also work great. I also found this amazing list on the Mighty Girl website. Basically, pick songs you don't mind listening to a bunch of times and have a positive message. This year, I plan to download my songs and play them from my iPad.

In each group session, I pass out the song lyrics and we listen to the song. The discussion stays low-key as each girl shares a part of the song that stood out to them. If I have a quiet group, we may dissect the chorus, but I try to let the girls lead the conversation. We then complete an activity related to the song.

In the first session, we listen to the song True Friend by Hannah Montana (Miley Cyrus) and reflect on our own friendship qualities to make a friendship goal. We then self-rate this goal weekly and discuss how each girl is improving her friendships. In another session, we create brochures describing your best qualities. As our culminating activity, we write a group story with all of the girls as characters, using their unique qualities as friends. As I was dusting off the group folder, I found this story a group of girls had written, I've changed the names but just had to share. I think it really captures the positive vibe these girls have.

This is the story of 5 girls: Donna the Diva, Zoe, Emma, Laura, and Madeline the Devine. These girls were all very nice, smart, talented, and flexible. They were amazing girls.

One day the evil witch called Bippity Boppity Boo came to town. The girls might have been scared but they knew that together they could defeat the evil witch.

The evil witch Bippity Boppity Boo tried to fool the girls with her magic wand. Her wand would make them doubt their amazing-ness. It felt bad, especially Donna Diva and Emmalne Devine who got caught up in Bippity Boppity Boo’s negativity. They felt very sad.

Madeline Devine was so upset because she had lost an ice skating competition.  Donna Diva was so depressed because she had lost her dance tournament.  They were so upset that they stole Zoe, Emma, and Laura’s pet rhino, Lemmy. Zoe, Emma, and Laura felt horrible. They missed Lemmy. Because the trio (that’s Zoe, Emma, and Laura to you) had lost their pet rhino, Lemmy, they were so upset that they pushed Donna Diva and Madeline Devine in the ocean.

Donna Diva and Madeline Devine were all wet. The cold water of the ocean woke them up from their trance and they realized that true friends are meant for each other. They had to mend their broken friendship….

The trio, Zoe, Emma, and Laura, had not been in the ocean to wake them up so they lied. They told Donna Diva and Madeline Devine that Bippity Boppity Boo had pushed them. Of course, Donna Diva and Madeline Devine were upset because being lied to is not fun. So they told the trio, “We don’t like be lied to. Please stop.” The truth woke the trio from their trance and they apologized for lying and for pushing Donna Diva and Madeline Devine in the ocean. Madeline Devine and Donna Diva immediately gave Lemmy back to his happy owners and apologized for taking him.

The 5 amazing girls were so happy to be friends again that they decided they needed to defeat Bippity Boppity Boo. They knew they needed to feel great about themselves to take away the evil witch’s power.

To feel great about themselves, they did things that made them feel good like stand up for yourself, remind yourself to have fun, and believe in yourself.

The End
